Hello my beautiful readers! I was thinking that this weeks post would be Harry Potter -themed. I am going to talk about the differences between the books and the movies, and which ones I prefer. So keep in mind that these are my opinions. If I say that I like the books more than the films and you love the movies, don't feel attacked. These are just my opinions.
And before you ask, in my opinion the best movie is The Prisoner of Azkaban and the best book is either The Half Blood Prince or The Deadly Hallows.
If you somehow haven't read the books or watched any of the movies SPOILERS! You have been warned.
Book Ron is better than Movie Ron
I feel like most of the Harry Potter fans know that Book Ron and Movie Ron are quite different. The difference can already be seen in the first movie. When Harry, Ron and Hermione are trapped by the devil's snare, Hermione knows what to do immediately. In the book she nearly forgets that she is a wizard and Ron has to remind her. In the later movies a lot of Ron's lines are given to Hermione. I feel that in the movies Ron feels more a comedic relief than the best friend he is in the books.
The casting is fairly good
Everyone has their opinion about how Daniel Radcliffe should have had green eyes and the line "You have your mothers eyes" doesn't work in the movies. But no one can disagree on how perfectly the casting was done on Severus Snape, because Alan Rickman is perfect for the role. Also the casting on Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) and of course Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith).
A lot is left out from the movies
Anyone can understand that when you are adapting a 1000 pages long book there are some things that have to be left out. Here are my top 10 things that they left out from the movies:
- The Quidditch World Cup from The Goblet of Fire
- Peeves entirely
- In The Deadly Hallows when Dudley says to Harry: “I don't think you're a waste of space.”
- Harry's sassy moments, like this one: “Listening to the news! Again?” “Well, it changes every day, you see,” said Harry. (The Order of The Phoenix)
- The scene in Order of The Phoenix when Molly faces the bogart
- Hermione solving Snape's puzzle in The Philosopher's Stone
- Dobby working at Hogwarts kitchen in The Goblet of Fire and him helping Harry in The Triwizard Tournament (in the movies they just replaced Dobby with Neville) and Dobby finding The Room of Requirement in The Order of The Phoenix
- Tonk's and Lupin's relationship
- Harry yelling at Dumbledore at the end of Order of The Phoenix
- Kreacher leading the house elves into battle
What bugs me the most is the change on Ravenclaws colors and the animal. In the books Ravenclaws colors are described to be blue and bronze and the animal on the seal is an eagle, not a raven. It feels like the studio, or whoever was responsible for the design, made the logical decision that because the house is called RAVENclaw then the animal should also be a raven, not an eagle, even tho it was described on the books.
The housing system is a little bit rubbish & other things J.K Rowling has done
Now, the housing system... It's clear that in the books and in the movies the Slythering House is evil and the Gryffindor House is good. In the movies the representation of the Hufflepuff House and the Ravenclaw House is little. Yes, in the Goblet of Fire we have Cedric Diggory and from The Order of The Phoenix forward we have Luna Lovegood as Ravenclaws representation but that's quite it. Most of the merchandise is mostly Gryffindor, then Slythering and some Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
Here are two videos from Seamus Gorman where he explains things way better than I did.
